Still Playing The Freelance Game

So we've been in St. Albert since the 29th of August (at least I believe it was the 29th), and I'm still lacking in the area of full time employment. This is not due to a lack of trying though. I think I've been in contact with pretty near every Web and Graphic design firm in the Edmonton and St. Albert areas. I'd like to continue on with the freelance gig, but right at this point that even seems to be slowing down. I've been told by a few local printers that this time of year tends to be a little slow, but things pick up before, and after Christmas.

I'm almost at my wits end searching for full time employment. I'm not going to give up, because I know that this is what I want to do for a career, but god damn it's discouraging. I feel that I produce attractive, quality work, and I'm just waiting for someone to recognize that. I've spent countless hours searching job databases, making phone calls, networking with everyone that I possibly can, but to no avail. I realize that it is a difficult industry to break into, and I guess that's what I'm waiting for, is someone to give me that break. I continue to try to improve myself as a designer through projects such as the design for From Away, also the portal for what has become the Jeff Smith Designs Network, as well I'm also working on redesigning my my portfolio to give it a fresh new look in the hopes that will attract some more business.

At the present, I'm considering taking out an ad in a few of the local papers, to try and advertise myself, hoping that someone will catch the bug, and give me a chance at a job, or even another interview. I really dislike the idea of prostituting myself such as this, but I'm starting to run out of ideas. If anyone has any contacts they can pass along to me, any job leads, what have you, please drop me an email or get a hold of me on MSN at the same address (AIM: jeffsmithdesigns).

*Update* WIP Site Redesign

Well, jeffsmithdesigns.com has been open for only about 2 weeks and I'm working on a redesign already. I'm very bored of the current layout of the page, so I'm going to rework the whole layout of the site as well as the site organization. I'm going with a lot smoother, cleaner, feel to the site. Got a ton of ideas in my head, and I'm hoping to start on the design tomorrow if I get some free time during the day.

Stay tuned for updates!

**UPDATE #1: I've made a ton of progress today on the graphical side of the layout for Jeff Smith Designs V2. I'm really liking the way this layout is turning out, I think it's even smoother, and more refined than the last layout. I'm definitely much more satisfied with it. Below you'll find a tiny preview:

I'm going to try to finish off the graphics side of the layout by tomorrow afternoon, hopefully and then I'll have to give good ol' APC a little attention, I've been kind of ignoring any changes that I've planned to make there for a while because I've been a bit busy with work. Anyhow, stay tuned for more updates!

1000 Page Views and Other News

Hey the title rhymes, lol. :)

Well, I've finally hit 1000 page views. Still not that many comments though, I'd rather see many more comments about my work than page views, but I suppose that will come with time.

In other news bktribals has invited me to join devUnit, an up and coming DA art group. It's going to be a while before we start releasing art packs as we have to get organized and get our website up and running (devUnit Website. Thanks once again for inviting me to join guys!

That's all for now, hopefully I'll be adding some new pieces in the next few days if time allows.

jeffsmithdesigns.com Now Open!!

Watching: Replay of Tampa Bay's win last night

Well, I've finally got the website completed! Well...mostlly. Still haven't made it completely XTHML 1.1 strict which is what I had planned, I'm getting 5 or 6 errors when I run it through the validator, but that shouldn't take too long to fix, just gotta get off my ass and take care of it. Everyone should definitely take a look at it though and let me know what they think. I've put a ton of time and effort into integrating MovableType so it makes it super easy for me to update the site with new work and such. It's so nice to have it completed.

On another note, Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup last night as I'm sure everyone already knows. I'm especially excited because my hometown boy Brad Richards led the league in playoff scoring and also won the Conn Smythe trophy for playoff MVP. It's gonna be really awesome to see the Stanley Cup come home to PEI. I'll have to definitely make the trip to the Island to see the cup and I'm sure it will be quite the party.

Till next time...
